Rừng nhiệt đới Amazon đang chính thức tạo ra nhiều khí nhà kính hơn nó đang hấp thụ
Rừng nhiệt đới là một bể chứa carbon. Giờ đây, con người đã biến nó thành một nhà máy sản xuất carbon.

Rừng hấp thụ một lượng lớn carbon dioxide (CO2) từ bầu khí quyển của Trái đất, khiến chúng trở thành một phần quan trọng trong việc giảm thiểu biến đổi khí hậu. Nhưng con người có thể đã biến khu rừng nhiệt đới lớn nhất thế giới trở nên vô dụng - và thậm chí có thể gây bất lợi cho - cuộc chiến chống lại khí nhà kính, một nghiên cứu mới phát hiện.

Theo nghiên cứu, được công bố ngày 14 tháng 7 trên tạp chí Nature, rừng nhiệt đới Amazon hiện đang thải ra hơn 1,1 tỷ tấn (1 tỷ tấn) CO2, một loại khí nhà kính, mỗi năm, có nghĩa là rừng chính thức thải ra nhiều carbon hơn vào bầu không khí hơn là nó đang loại bỏ.

Các nhà nghiên cứu viết trong nghiên cứu của họ về việc cân bằng carbon giảm do "sự xáo trộn quy mô lớn của con người" trong hệ sinh thái Amazon, với các vụ cháy rừng - nhiều người cố tình dọn đất cho nông nghiệp và công nghiệp - chịu trách nhiệm cho phần lớn lượng khí thải CO2 từ khu vực. Đặc biệt, phía đông Amazon - nơi từng chứng kiến số lượng phá rừng lớn hơn trong lịch sử 40 năm qua - trở nên nóng hơn, khô hơn và dễ xảy ra hỏa hoạn hơn so với phần còn lại của rừng nhiệt đới. Kết quả là lượng phát thải khí nhà kính từ khu vực lớn hơn và ít cây cối hơn để hút lại carbon thông qua quá trình quang hợp.

Trong nghiên cứu mới, các nhà nghiên cứu đã phân tích gần 600 phép đo CO2 từ bốn địa điểm ở Amazon của Brazil, được thu thập bằng máy bay nhỏ từ năm 2010 đến năm 2018. Nhóm nghiên cứu phát hiện ra rằng, trung bình, các đám cháy gây ra khoảng 1,6 tỷ tấn (1,5 tỷ tấn) CO2 vào khí quyển mỗi năm, trong khi những cây khỏe mạnh chỉ hấp thụ khoảng nửa tỷ tấn.

Nhóm nghiên cứu cũng phát hiện ra rằng, trong khi miền đông Amazon đã trở thành nguồn phát thải carbon ròng, thì miền tây Amazon - nơi ít bị phá rừng hơn nhiều - không phải là nguồn carbon cũng không phải là bể chứa carbon. Ở đó, sự hấp thụ CO2 của các khu rừng khỏe mạnh sẽ cân bằng lượng khí thải từ các đám cháy, nhóm nghiên cứu viết.
