Các nhà nghiên cứu phát hiện sự tăng đột biến oxy trùng hợp với sự tuyệt chủng toàn cầu cổ đại
Hai trăm năm mươi hai triệu năm trước, phần lớn sự sống trên hành tinh Trái đất đang chết dần.

Trong một sự kiện đánh dấu sự kết thúc của kỷ Permi, hơn 96% các loài sinh vật biển trên hành tinh và 70% sự sống trên cạn của nó đột nhiên tuyệt chủng. Đó là tuyệt chủng lớn nhất trong lịch sử Trái đất.

Giờ đây, các nhà nghiên cứu của Đại học Bang Florida đã phát hiện ra rằng sự tuyệt chủng diễn ra trùng hợp với sự gia tăng đột ngột và sau đó là sự sụt giảm hàm lượng oxy của đại dương. Phát hiện được công bố trên tạp chí Nature Geoscience.

Các nhà khoa học trước đây đã từng chứng kiến ​​sự giảm dần lượng oxy trong đợt tuyệt chủng này, nhưng sự gia tăng lượng oxy nhanh chóng vào đầu đợt tuyệt chủng là một phát hiện mới. Các nhà nghiên cứu cho rằng quá trình oxy hóa xảy ra trong vài chục nghìn năm, một giai đoạn rất ngắn trên quy mô hàng triệu năm lịch sử địa chất của Trái đất.

Nguyên nhân chính xác của sự gia tăng ôxy đại dương này vẫn chưa được biết, tuy nhiên các nhà nghiên cứu đưa ra giả thuyết rằng sự phun trào liên tục trong ít nhất vài trăm nghìn năm của một vùng núi lửa lớn đã dẫn đến sự nguội đi trong thời gian ngắn và ôxy biển đột ngột tăng đột biến và sau đó là vụ tai nạn.

Mặc dù nồng độ ôxy biển cổ đại đang có xu hướng giảm trước khi tăng đột biến và vẫn ở mức thấp sau đó, nhưng sự thay đổi nhanh chóng về mặt địa chất và sự thiếu hụt ôxy trong thời gian dài dường như gây bất lợi cho sự sống hơn là sự giảm dần. Khí cacbonic thải ra trong đợt phun trào núi lửa đó đã khiến bầu khí quyển của Trái đất ấm lên, làm giảm lượng oxy trong các đại dương và khiến các đại dương trở nên tương đối khắc nghiệt trong hàng triệu năm.

Không thể đo trực tiếp nồng độ ôxy trong khí quyển hoặc biển cổ đại, vì vậy nhóm nghiên cứu thay vào đó đo đồng vị thallium, gián tiếp cung cấp thông tin để hiểu nồng độ ôxy biển trong quá khứ.

Các nhà nghiên cứu có kế hoạch nghiên cứu các tuyệt chủng cổ đại khác để xem liệu sự thay đổi mạnh mẽ tương tự trong ôxy có trùng hợp với bất kỳ sự tuyệt chủng hàng loạt nào trong số đó hay không, điều này có thể gây ra những tác động hiện đại khi biến đổi khí hậu và lượng chất dinh dưỡng tăng lên làm giảm lượng ôxy trong đại dương ngày nay của chúng ta.
