Experimenting with growing sacha inchi in Ho Chi Minh City
The authors at Nguyen Tat Thanh University have tested some methods of planting and preliminary processing seeds of sacha inchi - a plant with high economic potential.

In the sacha inchi tree, the seed is the most valuable part because it contains a very large amount of oil (41.4%), especially omega 3, 6, 9 and contains a lot of vitamins A, E, protein, fiber ,... In addition to making food, sacha inchi oil is also used in the cosmetic industry. Sacha inchi tree is easy to grow, with low initial investment, once planted but exploited for many years. Currently, the price of sacha inchi seeds is quite high (about 170,000 VND/kg). However, the production of sacha inchi is currently not high and the cultivated area is not much.
In order to search for new crops, in line with the orientation of strongly shifting low-yielding rice and sugarcane to other crops with higher economic efficiency, the authors at Nguyen Tat Thanh University performed the task " Research on some methods of planting and testing sacha inchi seeds in districts of Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding areas.
Accordingly, the implementation team studied and collected 5 samples of sacha inchi cultivars in many growing areas (Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Hoa Binh, Thailand), and then tested them in Cu Chi district (HCMC) and Cam My district (Dong Nai province). There was no difference in the height of sacha inchi trees from the garden and after 30 days of planting in the samples. The growth and development samples were quite uniform in the 2 growing areas of Cu Chi and Cam My.
omparing the harvest results, the seed sample in Hoa Binh (S18) obtained the most fruits (average 45-46 fruits/tree), the remaining samples had the number of fruits ranging from 38-42 fruits/tree. The seed sample S18 also gave the highest seed yield (g/plant) and the highest actual seed yield in the first fruit set (kg/ha). In addition, S18 is also the variety with the highest oil content (52.26%), Omega 3/6/9 content equivalent to international published sacha inchi oil.
The authors also used growth regulators to increase the ratio of female flowers to inflorescences, leading to an increase in the number of fruits per tree. According to the authors, this is a new solution that has not been used by anyone, so the group has registered for intellectual property protection for this method with the name "Process to increase the percentage of female flowers on Plukenetia sacha inchi."
The effect of growth regulators at the flowering stage to inhibit male flowers, increase the number of female flowers, so the percentage of pods increased, 5.67 times higher than the control. As a result, the yield of dried fruit reached nearly 332.5 fruits/tree; seed yield per tree reached 850 g/plant, increased 5.28 times compared to the control; seed yield in the first pod was 2.05 tons/ha, 4.9 times higher than that of the control; The actual yield in the first year was 4.40 tons/ha, 4.4 times higher than the control.
The author's project has been accepted by the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City this year. The research results can be applied to the sacha inchi growing in Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding areas.
