Chitosan is produced from the by-products of the seafood processing industry (especially the shrimp processing industry) with wide applications. Illustration.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, each year, Vietnam raises and exploits more than 6 million tons of aquatic products, of which shrimp accounts for a large amount and continues to increase in the direction of building the fisheries sector to become a spearhead of the economy of the Government.
However, due to limited seafood processing technology, the final products are mainly frozen products or have low processing content, while the amount of by-products that have to be discarded in the production process is still quite high with a high percentage rate is about 35% - 60%, equivalent to more than 2 million tons of seafood by-products per year, including about 250 tons of shrimp by-products.
On 03/03/2023, leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology signed the Decision to publish 02 TCVN: (1) TCVN 13658: 2023 Chitosan derived from shrimp - Requirements; (2) TCVN 13659: 2023 Animal feed - Hydrolyzed shrimp protein. This is the orientation of the Directorate of Standards, Metrology and Quality in strengthening linkages with businesses and scientists, promoting the construction of TCVN in association with sustainable socio-economic development and international integration.
