Vinh Long province is located in the center of the Mekong Delta, accreted by two rivers Tien Giang and Hau Giang, so the land is fertile, fresh water all year round, meeting favorable conditions to develop a global agricultural industry, variety of products, such as rice, fruits, livestock, poultry and seafood. The mainland area is a concentrated area of rice cultivation, specialized cultivation of citrus trees, crops, livestock and poultry raising. The area of the islands mainly grows specialty fruit trees and fish farming.

However, Vinh Long is also affected by saline intrusion, threatening agricultural livelihoods in rice production areas and fruits and cash crops, especially in Vung Liem district, Tra On, Mang Thit and etc.

On the basis of analyzing the characteristics of existing and popular local agricultural livelihood models, the Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology, Hydrology and Environment has reviewed 25 models of adaptation to saltwater intrusion in the context of climate change, effectively applied in the Mekong Delta region.

At the same time, based on the set of criteria for assessing the feasibility of the Institute of Water, Irrigation and Environment and the set of criteria proposed by CARE Vietnam in order to identify suitable climate change adaptation livelihood models in Vietnam. In the Mekong Delta, the Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology, Hydrology, and Environment selected 15 models in the fields of cultivation, husbandry, aquaculture and combined production, etc., which are highly feasible when applied in Vinh Long province.

In which, there are models, such as Reducing seed quantity in rice production in Vung Liem district; Production of high-yield hybrid glutinous corn in Tra On district; Growing watermelon on rice land lacking irrigation water in Mang Thit district; Raising high-quality breeding cows in Mang Thit district; Breeding of tilapia adapted to mangroves in Vung Liem district; Growing green-skinned orange improves irrigation techniques to adapt to drought and salinity; Cultivation of giant freshwater prawns in brackish water ponds;

Through pilot implementation in the locality, the above models have high economic efficiency and demonstrate the potential for replication in areas with similar conditions.
