Can Tho Researches on using freshwater algae as raw material for fish feed production and nutritional supplement for plants
On May 15, 2025, the Department of Science and Technology of Can Tho City organized an Advisory Council to select organizations and individuals to conduct research on the use of freshwater algae as a source of raw materials for fish feed production and nutritional supplements for crops.

The Council was presided by Dr. Ngo Anh Tin - Director of the Department. Attending the meeting, there were Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thanh Men (main researcher), Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology Advances, along with scientific members, experts, researchers participating in the review and representatives of a number of press agencies in the city.

Overview of the metting
Freshwater algae – an abundant source of biomass, with fast growth rate and effective nutrient metabolism, is being studied by many countries as a sustainable solution for agricultural production and aquaculture. The use of algae not only contributes to reducing input costs, replacing imported ingredients in animal feed, but also improves soil quality, promoting ecological agriculture.

Research team
However, “Exploiting the potential of freshwater algae in agriculture and aquaculture brings many ecological and economic benefits. However, in Vietnam today, there are still very few in-depth studies on this topic” – the research team commented.
Faced with that situation, the research team applied many modern methods and techniques suitable for the research field. Thence, contributing to the socio-economic and scientific foundation the following products: Collection of freshwater algae list in Can Tho city (at least 10 algae species); Data on the main nutritional components in algae and selecting at least 02 algae species with potential application as fish feed and fertilizer to provide nutrition for plants; 01 process of producing fish feed from algae with the ability to increase immunity and growth in fish (weight 50 kg/batch) and the product created from the process; 01 process of producing fertilizer for plants from algae to increase crop productivity (weight 50 kg/batch) and the product created from the process, ... and many products related to scientific research and training.
The project was unanimously approved.
Along with the practical and constructive contributions of the Council, the project is expected to contribute to the development of the agricultural and aquatic economy of the Mekong Delta in general and Can Tho city in particular.
