Energy management according to ISO 50001: An effective tool to support sustainable development
ISO 50001 is an international standard on energy management systems, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2011, to help organizations optimize energy use in production and business activities.

In Vietnam, this standard has been converted into TCVN ISO 50001:2012 and TCVN ISO 50001:2019, creating a solid legal foundation for businesses to apply advanced energy management solutions. Implementing this standard not only helps reduce production costs, but also contributes to environmental protection, ensuring energy security, and building a green, friendly business image.
Although ISO 50001 is an effective energy management tool, in reality in Vietnam there are still many limitations due to lack of knowledge and implementation experience. Many businesses only focus on individual solutions to improve the efficiency of equipment such as boilers, compressors, chillers, missing the opportunity to save 10-30% of energy when applying comprehensive system management according to this standard. Moreover, businesses face difficulties in initial investment, the process of checking and evaluating effectiveness after implementation is also not synchronized, need to be improved to promote the transition from individual measures to a comprehensive saving strategy.
To promote the widespread application of ISO 50001, close coordination is needed from the Ministry of Industry and Trade and relevant agencies. It is necessary to strengthen propaganda, raise awareness, train management and technical staff, and develop preferential policies, such as capital support and technical support programs for businesses. These efforts not only help businesses save energy and reduce costs, but also contribute to building a green, sustainable economy, protecting the environment and combating global climate change.
