Council approved establishment of intellectual property rights for OM rice varieties of the Mekong Delta Rice Institute
In the afternoon of April 21, 2022, Can Tho City Department of Science and Technology established a Science and Technology Council to review and establish the intellectual property rights of OM rice varieties of the Mekong Delta Rice Institute. Dr. Ngo Anh Tin, Director of Department of Science and Technology, is Chairman. Dr. Duong Hoang Son is in charge. The Mekong Delta Rice Institute is an implementation agency.

The mission of science and technology (S&T) is to improve the efficiency of intellectual property development activities, especially in the field of rice varieties of the Mekong Delta Rice Institute, to encourage creative activities, to protect and effectively exploit research results in production.

Council members
S&T tasks include 4 contents: Consolidating and operating the organization of intellectual property (IP) activities at the Mekong Delta Rice Institute; Registration for protection of OM rice varieties (5 varieties); Building a brand of specialty rice/nutritional color rice as a functional food of the Mekong Delta Rice Institute (2 brands); Recognition of 01 OM rice variety as official rice variety or recognition for production circulation.

Research team
The performed S&T tasks will contribute to bringing the IP Law into practice of the unit; Raising awareness of full-time staffs, managers and researchers on IP work; Improve capacity of training, scientific research and transfer of technical advances of the Institute; Improve capacity of organization, implementation and management of IP operations apparatus of the unit; Improve the efficiency of investment in training and scientific research activities as well as apply the results to actual production and life, contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality; Create motivation to promote scientific research, registration, management, exploitation of intellectual property and technology transfer.
The Council has unanimously approved the S&T task, but the research team needs to amend and supplement some contents according to the suggestions of members of the council.
