Amendment of Cao Phong orange geographical indication registration certificate
Cam Cao Phong was granted a geographical indication registration certificate by the Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam No. 00046 under Decision No. 3947/QD-SHTT dated November 5, 2013. According to this Decision, the Department of Science and Technology of Hoa Binh province is the organization that manages geographical indications, citrus products bearing such geographical indications include: CS1 oranges, Doai Lun commune, Doai Cao commune, and Canh oranges located in the geographical area of Cao Phong town and communes: Tay Phong, Bac Phong, Dung Phong, Tan Phong and Thu Phong of Cao Phong district, Hoa Binh province.

V2 Cao Phong orange

Orange trees have been grown in Cao Phong district, Hoa Binh province since the early 1960s, due to adaptation to ecological conditions, the product has unique quality characteristics. Since being protected until now, this GI has achieved a number of positive effects. The area under orange cultivation in Cao Phong district has increased from 827 hectares in 2014 with an output of 10,000 tons has increased to 2,817 hectares in 2019 with an output of over 38,000 tons (3.4 times in area and 3.8 times in output). The protection of geographical indications of Cao Phong oranges has contributed to the formation of a large-scale concentrated commodity orange production area, and the growing area of oranges has been expanded both inside and outside the protected geographical area (from 6 communes/ town out all 13 administrative units of Cao Phong district). Cao Phong orange production follows the direction of improving food quality and safety. The area of oranges produced according to VietGap standards in 2014 was about 100 hectares, 170 hectares in 2016 and over 1,000 hectares in 2019 (35% of the district's total orange area). The value and efficiency of production increased sharply, the average selling price of products at the garden was 10,000-12,000 VND/kg before 2014 increased and remained at 20,000-25,000 VND/kg, the average income was from 200-300 million VND/ha increased to VND 500-700 million/ha, many orange-growing households have an income of 1-10 billion  VND /year. Geographical indications have contributed to the creation and positioning of the brand "Cam Cao Phong" in the market. Previously, the trade name "Cam Cao Phong" was little known to consumers and had to borrow the name "Cam Vinh" for consumption. Since 2014, Cao Phong oranges have become the leading brand chosen by consumers in the North. The consumption market expands in the North and reaches the southern provinces. From 2016 until now, "Cam Cao Phong" has become a trusted brand of Hanoi market and the Northern provinces. Geographical indications contribute to diversifying forms of product consumption, forming high-quality goods channels (with packaging and labels), attracting large enterprises to participate in building the link between production and consumption (Big C, Vinmart...). The online sales channel of gardeners has become popular in Hanoi and other provinces, accounting for about 20% of total output. The expansion of commercial orange production has contributed to the creation of a large number of local jobs. Previously, orange farming only attracted about 1,500 households in Tay Phong commune and Cao Phong town, but now it has created jobs and stable income for about 5,000 households in all administrative units of Cao Phong district.

However, the geographical indication of Cao Phong oranges has not yet brought into full play the advantages and potential of the production area because some orange growing areas of Cao Phong district also have similar product quality and geographical conditions as well as geographical indication areas but not allowed to use geographical indications to commercialize products... causing inequality between economic actors growing oranges in Cao Phong district and inadequacies for geographical indication management. The V2 orange variety grown in Cao Phong since 2004 until now has confirmed its genetic stability in quality and yield, the product has good quality, ripens late, gives high economic efficiency, and has a wide variety of crops. orange crop lasts until May) but has not yet registered for protection of geographical indications. Face with that situation, on May 28, 2021, the People's Committee of Hoa Binh province authorized the People's Committee of Cao Phong district to carry out procedures for amending the Certificate of registration of geographical indications of Cao Phong orange.

On October 12, 2021, the Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam issued Decision No. 4506/QD-SHTT on amending the Geographical Indication Registration Certificate No. 00046 for Cao Phong orange products with the following amendments:

The organization for management of geographical indications was corrected to become the People's Committee of Cao Phong district.

The specific properties and quality of the product is added with the V2 orange variety with the following characteristics:

- Sensory: The fruit skin is smooth and thin. Succulent buds. Deep sweet taste. Aroma.

- Quality criteria: Brix degree from 9.65 to 10.37 0Br.

The geographical area is amended and supplemented into: Cao Phong town, Tay Phong commune, Bac Phong commune, Dung Phong commune, Thu Phong commune, Hop Phong commune, Binh Thanh commune, Thung Nai commune, Nam Phong commune and communes. Thach Yen belongs to Cao Phong district, Hoa Binh province.
