Protecting the geographical indication "Phetchabun" for sweet tamarind fruit products
On November 24, 2021, the Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam issued Decision No. 5300/QD-SHTT on granting the Certificate of Geographical Indication Registration No. 00114 for the sweet tamarind product "Phetchabun" to Phetchabun Province for Phetchabun Province (Phetchabun Provincial Government).

Phetchabun is a province located in the southern part of Northern Thailand, known as a Thailand sweet tamarind growing province and home to 11 varieties of sweet tamarind. The names of these varieties of tamarind are named after the shape characteristics of the fruit or named after the person who bred or discovered the tamarind variety. In 1974, on the occasion of "Farmer's Day of Phetchabun Province", Phetchabun Province held a "Sweet Tamarind Competition", thence, the event "Red Cross: Sweet Tamarind of Phetchabun Province" has been held annually since January 12 to January 20.

Phetchabun sweet tamarind is the second geographical indication of Thailand to be protected in Vietnam, after Thai Isan silk.

Phetchabun sweet tamarind has a straight or curved fruit shape depending on the variety of tamarind. Phetchabun sweet tamarind has an even brown skin, the pulp (flesh) is thick, uniform, soft, chewy and low in fiber, and has a sweet and tangy taste.

The specific characteristics and quality of sweet tamarind mentioned above are due to the natural geographical conditions and the traditional cultivation of sweet tamarind varieties.

The geographical area has a basin topography with the central area being the Pasak River stretching from North to South. The topography here is characterized by plateaus with a number of basins creating a rich soil with high phosphorus and potassium content, porous soil and containing many microorganisms, minerals, and a large thickness of soil layer at least 1m), the pH is about 5 - 7.5, so it is very suitable for growing sweet tamarind.

During the flowering and fruiting stage of the tamarind tree, the geographical area has an air humidity of about 50% - 90% and about 60% during the ripening stage. In addition, the geographical area also has a sufficient and stable rainfall during the flowering period of the tamarind tree so that the tree can grow well. The average annual rainfall ranges from 1,000 to 1,300mm/year, the annual average temperature is about 27oC.

Phetchanbun sweet tamarind consists of 5 varieties of sweet tamarind with straight fruit (like Sichomphu, like Khandee, like Prakai Thong, like Fak Dap, like Wan Lon) and 6 varieties of sweet tamarind with curved fruit (like Sithong, Sithong Bao, Nam Phueng, and Nam Phueng). Inthaphalam, like Mun Jong, like Saeng Athit). Sweet tamarind trees in the geographical area are watered, fertilized, and pruned in accordance with each stage of plant growth, especially in the dry season and flowering period.

Phetchanbun sweet tamarind harvest season from November to April next year. After harvesting, the tamarind fruits will be sun-dried or lightly dried. To preserve the product for a long time, continue to preserve the tamarind fruit by one of the following methods: drying; store in a cold room at a temperature lower than 10oC; irradiation with gamma rays; Steam with hot steam for 8 - 15 minutes depending on the size of the fruit.
