The conference was attended by more than 900 delegates from 193 member countries in both face-to-face and online forms. The Vietnamese delegation was led by Mr. Huynh Thanh Dat, Minister of Science and Technology.
This session approved the reports of WIPO Committees and Councils, such as Committee on Intellectual Property and Development (CDIP), Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR), Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC), Standing Committee on Patent Law (SCP), Standing Committee on Trademarks and Industrial Designs and geographical indications (SCT), the Standing Committee on Information Technology (SCIT), the Advisory Committee on Implementation (ACE), the PCT Union Council, the Madrid Union Council and the review of the report of WIPO on the Organization's activities from the last General Assembly session.
Some of the discussions that have attracted the attention of the Members include: (i) Proposal to support Ukraine's innovation and intellectual property system and (ii) the issue of convening the Diplomacy Conference for ratification of international instruments for the protection of traditional knowledge, genetic resources and folklore expressions and the Design Law Treaty.
Due to the lack of consensus, the WIPO Assembly in a rare occasion had to use the voting mechanism to adopt the agenda and Resolution on supporting Ukraine's innovation and intellectual property system. The General Assembly also achieved a breakthrough when it passed the decision to convene a Diplomatic Conference no later than 2024 to approve the international instrument on the protection of traditional knowledge, genetic resources and folklore expression and the Agreement on the protection of traditional knowledge, genetic resources and folklore expression and Design Law Convention.
This is really a big step forward in WIPO's international institution building after a long negotiation process from 2010 to present.
Speaking at the plenary session of the WIPO General Assembly, Minister Huynh Thanh Dat emphasized that as a member of WIPO, Vietnam is ready to join hands in implementing WIPO's joint initiatives in support of post-pandemic recovery Covid-19, facilitated stakeholders in the intellectual property and innovation ecosystem, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, innovative start-ups, and encouraged the participation of women and young people.
Vietnam is committed to continuing to be an active, proactive and responsible member of WIPO, for the development of an inclusive, balanced, dynamic and forward-looking global intellectual property ecosystem, contribute to enriching the knowledge and cultural treasures of mankind, promoting economic growth and sustainable development.
The WIPO General Assembly meeting ended on July 22, 2022.
