Vietnam can participate in the design of a new research reactor for the National Center for Nuclear Science and Technology
That is the conclusion drawn from the results of an independent national-level project for the period of 2016-2020 on research, calculation of neutron, hydrothermal characteristics and safety analysis of research nuclear reactors for Center for Nuclear Science and Technology (DTDL.CN-50/15) led by Assoc. Dr. Nguyen Nhi Dien (VINATOM).

During the implementation process, he and his colleagues surveyed, established and calculated the neutron and hydrothermal designs for four reactor core configurations: 1) IRT-4M fuel-use configuration with rim reflector Beryllium (Be); 2) VVR-KN fuel configuration with Be reflector rim; 3) Configuration using MRT fuel with reflector Be; and 4) MTR fuel configuration with heavy water reflector (D2O). The proposed configurations have good specifications for multi-purpose applications of a contemporary reactor in the world of the same power level.
The calculated values of neutron flux are well suited for typical applications, including: the production of 8 common radioisotopes in Nuclear Medicine (Mo-99, I-131, I-125, Y). -90, Ho -166, Lu -177, S -35, P- 32 and Sm-153) and sealed radioactive sources for medical (I-192) and industrial (I -192, Se-75, Co - 60) for domestic and export demand, neutron activation analysis, single-crystal silicon doped irradiation, study of material structure by neutron scattering and diffraction techniques, neutron imaging. One of the results of the project is the publication of “Conceptual design of a 10 MW multi-purpose research reactor using VVR-KN fuel” published in the journal of Science and Technology of Nuclear Installations.
