Protecting the geographical indication "Bac Kan" for blue-necked duck products
On June 5, 2023, the National Office of Intellectual Property issued Decision No. 756/QD-SHTT on the granting of Geographical Indication Registration Certificate No. 00130 for Bac Kan blue-necked ducks.

Department of Science and Technology of Bac Kan province is the organization managing this GI. Bac Kan is a mountainous province located in the inland center of the Northeast sub-region in the Northern Midlands and Mountains, located in the geographical coordinate range from 21048'22'' to 22044'17'' North latitude and from 105025'08'' to 106024'47'' East longitude. Blue-necked duck is a famous culinary specialty of Bac Kan province. The report "Planning on water resources for the period of 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050" of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in 2021, confirmed that the duck is an indigenous animal of Bac Kan province, with rare genetic resources needed to be conserved and protected for exploitation and sustainable development.
Bac Kan mature blue necked ducks have a large and short neck; small, short legs; leg height from 5.8 to 7.8 cm; neck height from 11.5 to 13.2 cm.
Whole fresh blue-necked duck meat has thick flesh, thin skin, and a thin layer of fat under the skin; bone percentage from 25 to 38.2%; the percentage of meat from 65.7 to 72.8 %; lipid content from 10 to 27.8%.
The unique qualities and qualities of Bac Kan blue-necked duck are obtained from the unique natural conditions of the geographical area. The geographical area has very complex topography and geomorphology, including a system of high hills, low hills, limestone mountains, surrounded by tectonic - erosion valleys. The temperature range between day and night in the geographical area ranges from 7 - 13oC. In winter, the temperature usually remains below 150C during the days with the northeast monsoon. The geographical area has clear and clean water sources, free from heavy metal pollution such as Arsenic, Lead and Mercury, which are taken from river and stream systems: Cau River, Nang River and Yen Lac River.
Some unique features of local people's breeding methods also contribute to the unique characteristics of Bac Kan blue-necked duck, specifically:
Breeding needs to choose blue necked duck with a weight of about 2.0 - 2.2 kg/male duck and from about 1.8 - 2.0 kg/female duck. The spawning and incubation of eggs are carried out in geographical areas. Ducks have smooth feathers, no deformities.
Geographical area: Ngan Son, Bach Thong, Cho Don and Cho Moi districts of Bac Kan province.
